Dr. Mike T. Nelson Interview with Aaron Guyett

Uncategorized Apr 01, 2021

300 words of what you do and why:

From an early age, I was a kid who read tonsssss.  And that worked it's way into auditing anatomy and physiology classes during my other course work.  I was fascinated by the human body and its ability to do everything. . . Move, digest, heal, be, exist, think.  So I finally funneled that passion into a PhD in Kinesiology.  Even while working for 14 yrs at a medical device company, I attended conferences on training.  At these conferences, I'd ask the trainers next to me if they read a study on this or that particular topic, and they looked at me like I'd sprouted another head.

My best friend (and now wifey) asked me what I thought I was put on this earth to do, and my response was . . . "I want to help people move and function and be better so that they are...

9 New Grips with Battle Ropes

New grips help your brain and body develop more resilience, more endurance and incredible strength, through different ways to create the link between your body’s movement and your battle ropes waves.

If you have used battle ropes at all, you are probably familiar with thumb forward and thumb away crush grips that are normal to any battle rope movements you can do with your single or doubled battle rope. These are a great way to change up your training, but if you have been training with your ropes for a while, I have 9 new grips that help you improve your grip strength and create increased versatility with your training.

 Fingertip End Grip

Grab the battle rope at the end of the handle with only your fingertips, including your thumb is brutal, even without trying to create movements or waves. This is amazing for anyone looking to strengthen their fingertip strength and grip strength (think climbers, combat athletes, and anyone looking to change the beginning of the...

Complex vs Circuit vs Flow with a Kettlebell

In this video Marcus Martinez breaks down the differences between the Kettlebell Complex, Circuit, and Flow.

While they look similar, what you will find as you learn a bit more, each is very different, and all three can be effective ways to train with kettlebells.

A complex is a string of exercises where you don't put the kettlebell down.

A variety of exercises, and you have breaks in between.

Focusing on being present, and exploring both creativity and what you can do effectively with a kettlebell without putting the bell down.

Intermittent Fasting for Improved Performance for Women and Men by Julia Glanz

In recent years, Intermittent fasting has become extremely popular - and for good reason.

There has been exciting findings and strong evidence supporting the positive outcomes of IF and how it can be used as a sustainable strategy for:

-       Weight loss[1]

-       Lowering inflammation[2]

-       Improving digestion[3]

-       Increasing fat burning[4]

-       Reducing insulin (your storage hormone)[5]

What is intermittent fasting?

Intermittent Fasting (IF) is a term used to explain an eating pattern where you cycle between periods of eating and periods of fasting (abstinence from food and caloric beverages). The therapeutic benefits have been documented for thousands of years and have shown that this way of eating is deeply rooted in our biology.

Philosophers like Socrates, Hippocrates, Plato and Paracelsus even believed in the health benefits of regular fasting.

Not only was fasting used...

Three Ways to Program Kettlebells

The simplicity of the kettlebell can’t be beat. I love the idea of grabbing a bell or two, finding a park with a pull up bar and getting to work. With a couple of kettlebells you can do just about anything except change the weight of the bell. Most people have access to a bell or two (or three if you’re REALLY lucky), but few have access to a rack of kettlebells as you’d see with dumbbells. Let’s say you take a lesson or a course and fall in love with kettlebell training. You find a bell, start progressing, but then there’s a gap between getting your next bell.

 What to do?

In order to get stronger you need to adhere to the principle of Progressive Overload. With a bar or dumbbells, it’s fairly easy to add another 5lbs every few sessions, but that’s not going to work with the kettlebell.

When I first started I only had access to a few bells so out of necessity I tried progressing in different ways. Little did I know...
